Yakushima NOT A HOTEL — architectural 3D visualization and CGI animation by Saccade studio. Project: Kerimov Architects, Yakushima, 2026. Client: architecture firm Kerimov Architects. Project type: public space. A concept villa on Yakushima Island — an entry for the Not A Hotel Design Competition 2026. Discrete volumes scattered among ancient cedars, an inner courtyard with a Japanese garden, and a pool that runs out into the forest. A competition design for a villa on the island of Yakushima by Kerimov Architects, an entry to the NOT A HOTEL Design Competition. The Japanese company NOT A HOTEL builds and sells villas designed by renowned architects; the jury included Bjarke Ingels and Sou Fujimoto, and more than a thousand entries came from 112 countries. Yakushima lies south of Kyushu and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site: ancient cedars, mountains and rain that falls almost constantly. The villa is assembled from separate room volumes, each with its own roof; at its centre is a courtyard with a Japanese garden of water, stone and plants, and the spa opens onto an infinity pool that dissolves into the forest. The idea rests on the Japanese notion of "ma" — a meaningful pause between things. The jury particularly valued projects that made Yakushima's relentless rains part of the experience — and rain became the main character of our stills. Of the nine, made in 11 days, the first is the villa in a downpour, with only the windows and the pool aglow; then an aerial view of the house on a green slope beneath a sharp mountain peak, morning light over the pool and the timber terrace, the courtyard with bowls of water among gravel and bonsai, and interiors in warm timber — a bedroom and a living room with a fireplace in a sunken sofa.
