A spa centre in Konakovo on the Volga — a stepped timber volume with a pool opening directly onto the water. The terraces follow the slope of the bank, timber cladding dissolving into the birch forest around. The architecture is set into the hillside so that the forest and water remain the dominant presence. A concept for a spa centre on the Volga near Konakovo, for Masterskaya B — a Moscow interdisciplinary practice working across architecture, design and scenography, known for exhibitions at Garage, MMOMA, the Polytechnic Museum and the Tretyakov Gallery. Guest wings in weathered timber step down the slope towards the water, each level with a planted terrace. Below sits a concrete spa block whose pool continues as a pier out over the water, all within a birch forest. In our stills the building lives through different weather — five states that took six days to make: drizzle and wet boardwalks, fog over still water, snow and a child making a snow angel seen from above, morning sun through haze, and blue dusk from the air with every window lit.
