Monorail

Monorail — architectural 3D visualization and CGI animation by Saccade studio. Project: Totan | Saga | Scape | MTP, Moscow, 2025. Clients: architecture firm Totan, architecture firm Saga, landscape architecture firm Scape, MTP. Project type: public space. A revitalisation concept for the Moscow Monorail, prepared for a presentation to the mayor: infrastructure turning into an elevated city park. Nine frames, four authoring bureaus, one task — to make the case that this is possible. For almost twenty years the Moscow Monorail carried passengers from Timiryazevskaya to VDNKh — above Fonvizina, Milashenkova and Akademika Koroleva streets, past the Ostankino Tower and the television centre. Now its viaduct is being turned into Russia's first year-round elevated park: about four kilometres of alleys, a running track and flower beds six metres above the ground. The park will link the Ostankinsky, Butyrsky, Timiryazevsky, Alexeyevsky and Marfino districts, home to some 300,000 people, and connect the Main Botanical Garden with Timiryazevsky Park. The stations will become pavilions: Telecentre for media projects and installations, Ulitsa Milashenkova an exhibition hall, Vystavochny Tsentr a viewing platform overlooking the Sun of Moscow wheel and the Main Entrance of VDNKh. The challenge is to turn a structure designed for trains into a place for people: bring them up by new stairways, plant the viaduct and keep the lightness the city expects of it — Moscow's chief architect called the future park a new visual "stage" for the city. The concept was prepared for a presentation to the mayor by four practices — Totan, Saga, Scape and MTP — and we had 19 days to make the case that a grey viaduct can become the neighbourhood's favourite place. The result was 11 stills: stations under timber lattice shells, a café in a gallery of timber arches, a running track among grasses and towers, a pond with swans in front of the park, an evening glass pavilion above a stream of buses. More than 70% of participants backed the idea in the Active Citizen vote. The monorail has closed, the planning project has been approved and the section near VDNKh has already been dismantled to open up the view of the Main Entrance — the park is being prepared for construction.
